United Nations Office Disarmament Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) Officer

Patrick Loots currently holds the position as Disarmament Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) focal point in the United Nations Office to the African Union (UNOAU) based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Patrick obtained a Master’s Degree in Law from the University of Pretoria and currently finishing his MBA at the Management College of South Africa (MANCOSA) in Durban. His professional career started in 1992 as a Legal Advisor in the South African National Defense Force followed by an extensive career as an Advocate of the High Court of South Africa in Pretoria and Cape Town.

He started his UN career in 2010 and since then he served in the UN Mission in Sudan, South Sudan, and Somalia and since January 2017 in Ethiopia.

His UN career was highlighted in 2013 when he was appointment as Chief of the DDR Section in the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia where he developed and implemented a rehabilitation and reintegration program for disengaged Al Shabab and Al Qaider terrorists.

An adventurer and traveler by heart 3 three Antarctic expeditions under the belt with a passion to really help people in need, rather than only talking about it been referred to as: “One mans terrorist is another man’s carpenter.”

He also worked as a volunteer at the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) and Mountain Recue services in South Africa.

As an active speaker and trainer in Europe, USA and Africa have provided guidance and advice to civilians, military, world leaders and religious leader on an alternative approach to “terrorist” mediation, rehabilitation and reintegration into communities.

He has been providing training to a multitude of training institutions including support to the Finnish Military Academy, The Barcelona International Peace Resource Centre (BIPRC), Transition International (TI) in the Netherlands. The Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey and the UN Systems Staff College in Turin.
